Abstract

Qualitative research work on the consumption of psychoactive substances in women over 60 years of age, affected by conditions of social and economic vulnerability, during the COVID19 pandemic. Eleven women, users of food assistance devices from communes 7 and 9 of CABA, participated in the project and were interviewed between October and December 2020. The findings of the study show that the use of legalized psychoactive substances is a common practice in this group, being psychotropic drugs the most frequently referred substance of current consumption. The pandemic increased the demand for prescriptions for tranquilizers, sleeping pills and antidepressants to treat anxiety, insomnia problems and weight gain, which, strikingly, was the consumption of greatest concern for most of the interviewees. The chronic consumption of psychotropic drugs and the problematic consumption of alcohol at different stages of life were linked to family conflict, situations of gender violence and addiction problems in the family. The interviewees agreed that alcohol abuse is signified and valued differently when it occurs in men or women and; for this reason, women often hide it. Smoking was identified as a frequent habit, associated with the concept of addiction and with serious consequences for health. The results of this work make it possible to make visible a topic that is not frequently studied, and contribute to improving the information on experiences, living conditions and the reasons that drive older women to consume.
