Abstract

Introduction: In Chile, psychosocial risk at work is measured with the SUSESO / ISTAS21 questionnaire, an instrument validated in 2008 and mandatory in all workplaces since 2013. Since then, it has become necessary to update the instrument, incorporating new dimensions, eliminating others that were unsuitable, and generally considering the experience of experts and users of the questionnaire. Materials and Methods: The COPSOQ III international questionnaire was considered as the basis. The COPSOQ III risk scales were translated, subjected to cognitive interviews, and applied, plus the GHQ-12 mental health and employment vulnerability scales, and other general and sociodemographic items. A probabilistic, stratified, conglomerate and multi-stage sample of households was designed, with a non-proportional distribution, in Antofagasta, Valparaíso, Santiago, Concepción and Puerto Montt - Puerto Varas. The exploratory factor analysis method (common factors, oblimin rotation) was applied to the whole set of questionnaire responses, then confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach’s alpha, test-retest correlation, and differential item functioning test. The entire final analysis process was discussed with a group of experts. Results: The most appropriate factorial solution was 12 factors, both from the results of the statistical tests and from the theory and operationality. Individual risk levels were calculated for each worker. Discussion: A valid and reliable instrument for measuring psychosocial risk in the workplace, with 12 dimensions, and with their normal values for Chile, is made available to the community
